Rooted in Love - The Saga Beneath Borders

Rooted in Love - The Saga Beneath Borders

Curatorial Note:

Rooted in Love is a powerful visual narrative that situates the emotional journey of migration within a deeply socio-political context. The painting depicts blooming roses connected by a vast, tangled web of roots beneath the surface—symbolizing the invisible emotional, cultural, and ancestral ties that immigrants carry across borders. Through this imagery, the artist critiques systems that demand assimilation over integration and challenges the erasure of identity in the pursuit of “belonging”.

This work speaks directly to the diasporic experience—a continuous negotiation between memory and displacement, between cultural retention and social acceptance. It acknowledges the psychological toll of forced migration, systemic exclusion, and cultural alienation, which are often compounded by racism, xenophobia, and institutionalized othering in the host society. The roots become a metaphor for identity, heritage, and the resilience required to stay emotionally connected to one's origin in an environment that is structurally designed to sever those ties.

The painting functions as a counter-narrative to dominant nationalist discourses that treat immigrants as perpetual outsiders. It critiques racialized social hierarchies that determine belonging not by humanity or contribution, but by color, accent, and lineage. By referencing the racialized violence, colorism, and state-sanctioned discrimination many immigrants face, the artist offers a poignant reminder: the roots of migrants are not a threat—they are a source of strength, continuity, and cultural richness.

The artist reclaims the right to hold multiple identities, to belong without erasing origin, and to plant roots in any soil without losing the essence of who one is. This original painting stands as a political and emotional statement—not only to the struggles of migration, but also to the indestructible human desire to belong, connect, and thrive, despite systems that seek to uproot. Re-rooting oneself in a new land in order to make it home.

Rooted in Love belongs to the series named "Disenthralled".
