Lullaby - The Wings of Shelter

From the series Disenthralled

2024

Acrylic on canvas

36 × 36 in. (91 × 91 cm)

CURATORIAL NOTE

Disenthralled refers to the act of freeing oneself from the invisible social structures, norms, and inherited beliefs that confine identity, desire, and self-expression.

Lullaby examines sexual and gender-based violence as a condition embedded within institutional power structures rather than as an isolated act of individual wrongdoing. Situated within systems that normalize silence and regulate credibility, the artwork reflects on how legal frameworks, educational environments, family expectations, and media narratives collectively shape responses to harm. Cultural stigma, procedural barriers, and uneven policy enforcement influence who is believed, who is protected, and who is left navigating scrutiny alone.

The work further addresses the structural privatization of care. When formal systems fail to provide consistent protection or restorative pathways, responsibility shifts to informal networks and communities. The enclosed formation of figures suggests solidarity not merely as comfort but as necessity. In alignment with Spring in Winter's structural methodology, Lullaby reveals how belief, protection, and healing are socially distributed, and how collective solidarity can emerge as a compensatory support structure when institutional design falls short.

This artwork invites viewers to reflect on the social architectures that regulate power, silence, and care. How do cultural norms, institutional procedures, and policy frameworks determine who is believed, protected, and supported after harm, and how have these same structures shaped your understanding of credibility and care?
