Homecoming - The Ancestral Feast

Homecoming - The Ancestral Feast

Curatorial Note:

For the artist, the seeds of imagination for the painting Homecoming were first planted in the warm embrace of her grandparents’ home — a sanctuary where humor and love found their way even into the walls. Among its treasures hung a whimsical painting by her grandmother: a pig couple, finely dressed, joyfully feasting on a huge pork roast. What might have seemed absurd to the casual eye became, in the artist’s memory, a symbol of the family’s lighthearted spirit, their ability to find delight in the simple act of gathering.

Years later, this memory returned in the form of her own creation — turkeys seated at a celebration table, partaking in the very ritual that remains the artist’s happiest memory of time spent at her grandparents’ home. At once playful and poignant, the work reflects on the cyclical nature of life, tradition, and celebration. Yet, beneath its humor lies a deeper yearning: the echo of ancestral feasts and the sacredness of a table once full.

Through this painting, the artist recalls her grandmother’s unbridled eagerness for the first bite, and her grandfather’s quiet pause — holding her hands still, waiting for the family picture. In this tender moment lives the essence of homecoming: the rituals that shape us, the tables that anchor us, and the truth that their significance is most profoundly felt only in their absence.

Belonging to the series Together, Again, the artist does more than recreate a scene; she builds a bridge between memory and philosophy — a reminder that every feast is more than food. It is love, legacy, and the fragile beauty of time gathered around the table.
