CURATORIAL NOTE
Disenthralled refers to the act of freeing oneself from the invisible social structures, norms, and inherited beliefs that confine identity, desire, and self-expression.
My Queen examines symbolic power and racialized gender hierarchy through the metaphor of the chessboard, a space defined by rule-bound movement and stratified value. The artwork reflects on how authority has historically been constructed through colonial racial ordering and patriarchal institutional design. Crowns, posture, and proximity signify inherited roles within systems that assign legitimacy unevenly.
In alignment with Spring in Winter's structural methodology, the work traces how macro hierarchies of race and gender are reinforced through institutional practices and internalized at the level of lived expectation. By positioning these figures within a space governed by strategic hierarchy, My Queen exposes the rule-bound structures that assign value and determine who deserves authority. The artwork invites viewers to reconsider how power is constructed, distributed, and visually normalized within social systems.
