My Queen - In Pursuit of a Royal Equilibrium
My Queen - In Pursuit of a Royal Equilibrium
Curatorial Note:
In this painting, the artist confronts the layered dynamics of power, race, and desire through the lens of a chessboard — the ultimate arena of strategy, hierarchy, and control. At its center, a white queen and a black king engage not in conflict, but in a tender, transcendent embrace, challenging centuries of established norms and coded boundaries. They are both strong yet weak. Their love is a radical act, a defiance of the socially constructed hierarchies that have historically privileged hegemonic authority and rigid gendered roles.
Through this visual metaphor, the chessboard becomes a stage where strategy and emotion intersect, and where love refuses to conform to the dictates of the “established". The white queen’s agency destabilizes the traditional patriarchal and racial order, asserting that strength, desire, and autonomy are not dictated by skin or gender. Likewise, the black king embodies authority redefined, moving beyond imposed stereotypes into a realm of mutual respect, vulnerability, and radical intimacy, in search of that royal equilibrium.
By transforming a centuries-old symbol of stratification into a site of collaboration and affection, this painting invites critical reflection on social structures and challenges viewers to imagine a world in which love, power, and agency are no longer constrained by inherited hierarchies. It is a meditation on equity, representation, and the radical possibilities of human connection.
My Queen belongs to the series named "Disenthralled".
